The Signs are Everywhere.

The Signs are Everywhere. From blocks of housing rebuilt painstakingly by volunteers and residents, to the new U.S. Courthouse flanking the river, to a state of the art convention center and new hotel, bookending our vibrant downtown with the New Bohemia Main Street District - this is a time of hope and optimism for our community. With more than 3/4 of a billion dollars invested in our community, the Signs of Progress are all around us.

At the five year mark, this is the time to look forward. This is not only a time to see how much is yet to be done - but also to pursue that vision of a vibrant and urban hometown. One we’re all proud to call home.

U.S. Courthouse

Community Investment:  $120 million    Status: Completion in calendar year 2012
Seventh Avenue SE

The new United States Courthouse will be a powerful civic building, intimately connected to its site and the city. The courthouse is located at the terminus of First Street - the primary north-south axis for downtown Cedar Rapids. At this prominent location, a line of tall , slender columns frame views through a seven-story, highly transparent glass wall to an interior wall made of Iowa limestone. The courtrooms entrances are all clearly visible within this wall. The rhythm of the columns, the transparency of the glass, the solidity of the stone and the visibility of the courtrooms work in concert to create an architecture that speaks both to the openness and the approachability of democratic institutions and the stability and order promised by the law.

Community Partners: OPN Architects, Ryan Companies US Inc, The City of Cedar Rapids, 2001 Development Corporation
