The Signs are Everywhere.

The Signs are Everywhere. From blocks of housing rebuilt painstakingly by volunteers and residents, to the new U.S. Courthouse flanking the river, to a state of the art convention center and new hotel, bookending our vibrant downtown with the New Bohemia Main Street District - this is a time of hope and optimism for our community. With more than 3/4 of a billion dollars invested in our community, the Signs of Progress are all around us.

At the five year mark, this is the time to look forward. This is not only a time to see how much is yet to be done - but also to pursue that vision of a vibrant and urban hometown. One we’re all proud to call home.

A+C+E District

Community Investment: TBD
Status: Near completion (June 2013)

Address: 3rd Street SE from 1st Avenue SE to 4th Avenue SE

Description: The ACE District (arts + culture + entertainment) is an investment in Third Street SE. Starting in the heart of downtown directly opposite the U.S. Cellular Center convention complex, this is an artery south through our cultural districts and the centerline off of which a high density of our communities arts, culture and entertainment amenities can be found. A concentrated effort on this street is intended to aid in the success of the convention complex, connect districts and amenities, and have ripple effects through New Bohemia and on to Czech Village, making for a vibrant and cohesive “main street” enjoyed by citizens and welcoming to visitors.

The City of Cedar Rapids is working on concept that provides additional pedestrian space on downtown streets by constructing removable platforms, or parklets. These parklets would be deployed during the warmer weather months to allow for outdoor cafes or other uses by downtown businesses and organizations. The City is also working on options to reduce travel lanes and provide more parking along 3rd Street SE.

Future years may bring installation of a full streetscape and long term beautification amenities.
Phase I: Third Street SE from First Avenue to Fourth Avenue (Phase II is in progress from Eighth Avenue to Fourteenth Avenue)

Community Partners:  City of Cedar Rapids, CRACVB, Economic Alliance, Downtown SSMID and stakeholders on Third Street SE
